In a group meeting Aparna Biswas, Programme Coordinator of ISHWAR discussed about WE CAN campaign and the main theme with posters and leaflets. She detailed about violence against women and the ways to minimize VAW. One day Ashima heard Malati, her friend of next door crying. It was a regular feature and every one knews about the fact. The cause is very simple. Malati's husband became drunk and beat her often. It is very normal and no one think to 'interfere' between the relationship of husband and wife. But Ashima made a strong protest that day. It was very unusual and so the villagers told her not to poke her nose in personal relationship. Then Ashima told it to her group members and they decided to protest against this torture. Ashima took leadership and discuss the matter with the panchayat members in different group meetings as well as with the friends of Malati's husband and family members. This time they were able to convince his friends, family members and as a result the pressure was mounted on Malati's husband. Now he realizes that he was wrong and stopped drinking and beating his wife. Most important this is not the end of this story. Last year in panchayat election the villagers selected Ashima as a candidate in the coming election.
