Overview of SHGPF
SHGPF is a non-profit organization, It has come to existence in year 2000 to provide a wider platform of sharing, learning
and addressing common opportunities and constraints being faced by this then emerging movement.Background
The Government of India and all State Goverments have emphasised the need to oganise self-help groups and extend financial services to the under priviledged
people of the society and the same has been incorporated in different policies as an important tool for poverty redction
There is a imperative
need for coordination to promote SGH based development agenda for realization of its fullest potetial. As a consequence, SHG Promotional Forum (SHGPF) of
the different NGOs and individuals has come into existence in the year 2000 to provide a wider platform for sharing, learning and addressing common
oppotunities and constraints being faced by this emerging movement. Now about 6,00,000 SHGs have been formed in diferent districts of West Bengal
In the above context Forum has zeroed down a three pronged strategy to address the issue of convergence of ideas by different models and
promoters and also augment the SHG movement in the state by:
 Bringing in more and more women in this movement
Strengthening the efforts to consolidate the potential of SHGs and
Placing the SHG movement in the pblic agenda.Composition
The general body is being registered under Society Registration Act and has representation from different SHG Promoting related institutions and individuals and there
is an Executive Committee to cary forward the activities.
Any Registered Institutions having legal entity, which is working as a self-help grop promoting or intends to work as such and to
uphold the holistic development of the Forum is eligible fo membership, subject to the approval of the Executive Committee of the Forum.
Individuals whose association with the Forum is likely to be beneficial for the successful implementation of aims and objectives of the Forum may be inducted as member.
At present this Forum has members are present almost in all the districts of West Bengal, with aout 30,000 SHGs being promoted by them. In addition, SHGPF has a working
relationship with other government and non-government promoters like. Women Development Undertaking (W.B Govt. under Social Welfare Dept.), Panchayat & Rural Development Dept.,
Govt. of West Bengal and Catholic Relief Services.
